Why can’t I comment on Instagram?
You’ve had your Instagram comments blocked!
IG continues to battle spammers, and innocent users are caught in the aftermath.
Duplicate comments, and comments with multiple users tagged, are likely to be blocked by Instagram.
But, there are lots of possible reasons your comments are not showing!
Read on to discover them all.
Why Is My Comment Not Showing on Instagram?
If you’re not able to add a comment, first try updating your app to the latest version.
If your Instagram app is up to date, you may be getting an error for another reason. Here are some possibilities:
- There’s an Instagram glitch. Try a hard close and restart your app.
- You’re on Airplane Mode or have no internet connection.
- The post has had commenting turned off, or limited to selected people.
- Instagram is down (it’s rare, but you can check here).
- You are over-engaging (likes, comments, follows, unfollows).
- You included more than 5 @ mentions in a single comment.
- You included more than 30 #hashtags on a single post.
- You posted multiple, duplicate comments (including emoji).
- You have a brand-new account and are trying to comment on numerous big accounts.
- You’ve included banned words or phrases.
- That account has blocked you, or a word you used, from comments on their posts.
The first 4, of course, have nothing to do with a block. They just require you to determine which is the cause, and take steps to fix the situation as soon as you can.
Or wait it out!
Reasons 5 – 11 are a bit trickier. Learn more about each below.
Also find tips on how long your block will last, and how to get unblocked faster!
How Often Can I “Like” and Comment on Instagram?
Instagram puts daily Engagement Activity Limits on your account. This is to safeguard against spammers using unethical growth tactics.
There’s not a specific limit for every account. You’ll have a lower limit if your account is newer.
In fact, for a brand-new account, I suggest limiting your activity severely until you complete your Instagram profile with a bio, add a profile picture, and share a few posts.
A typical Instagram user is allowed 60 activities per hour – that includes commenting, liking, following, or unfollowing someone on the app.
If you’re only commenting, you’ll be allowed 60 comments per hour or 180 to 200 comments per day.
The daily limit, however, increases with the age of your Instagram account. More established accounts can post up to 400 or 500 comments a day – significantly more than a new account.
Tips to avoid being restricted from commenting on Instagram:
- Gradually increase your number of daily comments.
- Avoid posting the same comment multiple times (including emoji) .
- Don’t over-engage (likes, follows, unfollows, comments).
- Don’t tag (@mention) more than 5 accounts in a comment.
- Don’t try to use more than 30 hashtags in one post.
Exceed these limits, and you’re put in “Time Out.” For a period of time, you won’t be able to do any of these activities.
TBH, I see similar on every social platform. Consistency is key!
Maybe you’re excited and you want to jump in enthusiastically. Take it easy. Slow and steady wins the race.
Before taking your social media break, you could try:
- Logging out and back in on your Instagram app.
- Posting your comment from a different device.
- Waiting for an hour or so before trying to comment again.
Why Can’t I Post the Same Instagram Comment Again?
Spammers (and some marketers) use automated “bot” commenting to draw attention to their accounts. It’s annoying to put up with as the Instagram audience grows, becoming a more attractive target.
Instagram is hoping to stop bot commenting by blocking comments that duplicate what you just posted.
Friends and I have noticed this on our personal accounts when we write “Congrats!” or similar to more than one person. Totally innocent, but IG only sees it as a duplicate comment – and blocks it.
If you’re marketing on Instagram, please don’t use bot commenting. Even if your comments are varied or spaced out enough to not get blocked – auto commenting is just flat-out annoying.
If you’re trying to make a number of quick comments, add a few relevant emoticons. IGers actually like those 🙂
But don’t repeat one comment in its entirety! Change up the emojis.
Consider including the person’s real name in the comment, too. Not only does this add a personal touch, it will help Instagram see it as a genuine, un-automated, comment.
Instagram Comments Blocked for Tagging Users [@mentions]
The current limit, according to Instagram, is 5 @mentions per comment.
If you tagged no more than 5, and your comment was still blocked, read on for more ideas.
In the past, I’ve had comments blocked when I’ve tried to thank a few users who have congratulated me on being featured by a “hub” account (see sample comment). This is disconcerting, as Instagram tells you your comment may be “abusive.” Certainly that would be the furthest thing from my mind!
After having that happen 3 times, I gave up tagging anyone who was not following my account. Now I’m tentatively tagging non-followers if they’ve tagged me first. This seems to be acceptable – for now.
Again, this blocking is due to those abusive spammers who tag numerous users in comments – usually on a post to “get free followers.” Ugh!
I have to admit, since this crackdown, those obnoxious spammers have declined greatly. Small price to pay, I suppose – as long as we nice folks don’t get confused with spammers, and possibly have our accounts closed!
I suggest you err on the side of caution. If I get another comment blocked due to tagging others, I’ll return to only tagging my followers.
If that doesn’t work, I’ll have to stop thanking people for congratulating me on hub accounts. It’s not worth risking a banned account.
Updated: Instagram has eased up on me for tagging multiple users in a comment thread. I’ve tried it a few times and didn’t get blocked. I was replying to people who had already commented in the thread, as in the image above right.
IG Comments Blocked on Accounts with Over 50K Followers
I hear this often. Several ‘grammers have found this post and left comments begging me to resolve this. Here’s my answer.
Starting a new account and quickly posting on huge and/or celebrity accounts is not typical behavior – except for spammers!
The only solution for this one? Don’t do it.
Be cautious of posting on accounts with huge followings immediately after opening an account.
Which Words Are Banned in Instagram Comments?
Instagram doesn’t provide a list of banned words. If they did, it would have to be constantly updated.
So, just be on your best behavior and try not to offend.
Don’t curse. Be kind.
Instagram says:
We want to foster a positive, diverse community. We remove content that contains credible threats or hate speech, content that targets private individuals to degrade or shame them, personal information meant to blackmail or harass someone, and repeated unwanted messages. We do generally allow stronger conversation around people who are featured in the news or have a large public audience due to their profession or chosen activities.
It’s never OK to encourage violence or attack anyone based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, sex, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, disabilities, or diseases. When hate speech is being shared to challenge it or to raise awareness, we may allow it. In those instances, we ask that you express your intent clearly.
Serious threats of harm to public and personal safety aren’t allowed. This includes specific threats of physical harm as well as threats of theft, vandalism, and other financial harm. We carefully review reports of threats and consider many things when determining whether a threat is credible. source
In addition, each account can set their own list of banned words… read on.
How Can I Block Comments on My Instagram Account?
As you probably know, you can post a photo or video with commenting disabled.
Did you know you can also block comments that contain specific words, phrases, numbers or emoji that you’d like to avoid?
Yes! Instagram has enabled Comment Controls, and these could be the reason your comment won’t post.
If your account is public, you’ll see a new way to choose who can comment on your posts — from everyone to just groups of people, like people you follow or your followers.
Also, whether your account is public or private, you’ll be able to block other accounts from commenting on your posts.
If you have the offensive comment filter turned on, you can also turn on a keyword filter to hide comments that contain specific words, phrases, numbers or emoji.
- Go to your profile and tap the three lines at top right.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Privacy and Security.
- Tap Comment Controls.
- Make sure that Hide Offensive Comments is turned on.
- Tap next to Manual Filter to turn it on.
Enter specific words, phrases, numbers or emoji in the text box to filter out comments.
Keep in mind that default and custom keyword filtering aren’t currently available in all languages:
- Default Keywords: The default list of keywords is only available in certain languages.
- Custom Keywords: Currently, custom keyword filtering doesn’t support languages without spaces (ex: Chinese, Japanese, Thai).
When you turn on comment filtering, it’s applied to both new and existing comments on your posts. When you turn off comment filtering, filtered comments on your posts will be restored. source
And of course, any account can block you, delete your comment, or even report you.
Instagram says:
You may find content you don’t like, but doesn’t violate the Community Guidelines. If that happens, you can unfollow or block the person who posted it. If there’s something you don’t like in a comment on one of your posts, you can delete that comment.
Be wise: only post #KindComments.
How Long Am I Blocked from Commenting on Instagram?
A typical block will last 24–48 hours.
If it’s your first offense, your block may be as short as 2 hours. Proceed cautiously! Be sure to review the daily and hourly limits above.
If you’re a repeat offender, and if you’re been reported by other IGers, your block could last as long as a week or even a month.
If you’ve been blocked from commenting by the account owner, please respect that. Don’t even try to comment or message that account.
How to Get UNblocked on Instagram
So you’re blocked, you’re not sure how long it will last, and you’re in the throes of Instagram withdrawals.
There may be some things you can do to get the block lifted faster.
According to Guiding Tech, if Instagram has blocked you, it could be that Instagram has blocked your IP address and not your account.
The first solution that you should try is to switch to mobile data instead of using your WiFi.
Or switch your IP address!
I haven’t tried this, but just read about it from someone who said they do this on a monthly basis. I don’t know all the ramifications changing this setting might have, so beware. Since you’re resetting, you will have to re-enter passwords.
The simple solution if you are on iPhone. Go to your settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings. This will give you new IP address.
If you’re still blocked, I strongly recommend you put the phone down and stay off Instagram for at least 24 hours.
And absolutely, stop using any automated tools that are not approved Instagram marketing partners.
It’s also recommended to link your other social media accounts inside your Instagram settings.
Basically, anything that makes your account look like it’s run by a real person!
You can also report your issue to Instagram from the Settings within the app.
On iPhone:
- From your Settings, tap Help.
- Tap Report a Problem.
- Tap Something Isn’t Working.
- State your case!
My guess is you’ll be unblocked before they read your problem report!
Here are more tips to unblock your IG account from a reader comment. Not sure if you have to do ALL these things, but essentially, you want to make your profile look genuine.
- Add / change a profile picture and description.
- Delete your link if it might be suspect (affiliate links, typos, possibly shortened links).
- Use Instagram normally. Do NOT use automation!
- Comment very little, if at all.
Another reader, QQ says:
I had the same problem. I could only post 3 comments every 24 hours. If I posted more than 3 comments I’d get banned for 24 hours from commenting (could still like pictures, follow people – just couldn’t comment.)
I did the following things:
– Change my profile (just write something new in your profile; maybe don’t leave any links until you’re unbanned from commenting too).
– Set a profile picture.
– Log in and out of your Instagram account.
– Go on your computer and log into Instagram. Like some pictures and try commenting at least once.
– On your phone, use Instagram normally: just browse, look at pictures, search hashtags, like some pictures, (show that you’re not a bot).
– Set a gender: male or female.
– Don’t comment for a few days or a week, but do all the above.
– Post two pictures (6 hours apart) every day.
I got unbanned in 4 days doing all this. I can comment all the time now, like pictures, follow etc. Good luck!!
Thank you QQ for sharing!
IG Comment Block Takeaways and To-Dos
I know it’s frustrating. As in all things, patience is a virtue here.
I don’t know how long your block will last. Just be sure you’re not making duplicate comments or multiple tags, which would likely make it worse.
Be sure you have the latest version of Instagram and your mobile OS. Old versions may prevent your comments from posting.
Never tag more than 5 users in one comment.
Try Instagram on your browser. At least one user has reported this resolved his issue.
If your app has frozen, you can try a hard shutdown of your device. This worked on my iPhone. I have no experience with Android or Windows devices, so do your due diligence before trying anything.
If you still can’t open Instagram, you can try deleting the app and reinstalling. Again, check this out first before trying. I’m not qualified to provide tech advice!
Read the comments to see if other readers have left advice you can follow.
Leave advice if you have any. If you ask a question, be aware that I have no further advice beyond what I’ve provided in this article. Maybe another reader can help.
Be real, be authentic, be you – and be careful not to get your Instagram comments blocked!
All info checked and verified for 2025 in late December 2024. Let me know if things change and I’ll update.
This post on blocked Instagram comments was originally published in April 2015 and has been updated 8 times.
Achmad Faisal says
I can’t change my username on instagram. Instagram says : “This action was blocked. Please try again later. We restrict certain content and actions to protect our community. Tell us if you think we made a mistake”.
What should I do? How long it happen?
Louise Myers says
Sorry, I haven’t heard of this before. Things are changing on IG due to Facebook ownership, I’m sure! Have you changed your account name before?
Lee says
Ive had trouble with leaving messages on accounts too. I had IG for ages but got rid. I joined back today to simply follow certain celebrity I like but replying to their pics doesn’t work, so it’s liking right now only.
Bit frustrating as im definitely not a spammer 🙁
Louise Myers says
Thanks for sharing your story. Seems IG is blocking all new accounts from commenting on celebrity pics. I can’t imagine who this helps. It’s certainly not that the celebrity is going to read all the comments. But I can see that spammers would partake in such an activity (probably posting “Get 300 free followers” LOL).
Rita Sangler says
Lots of details, thanks. I didn’t even know there were so many reasons to get somehow blocked. Although i think they don’t only battle spammers, they fight indiscriminateness. I used a service for automation that among other things has autocomment function. I wrote my own comments, polished it with some spinaxes and never got banned despite thousands of automated comments. So i guess it’s not only about spam, it’s more about making Instagram more meaningful.
Louise Myers says
Are you saying automated comments are meaningful? I beg to differ. I’m sorry to hear you’ve been able to spam comments like that. Receiving bot comments is sadly a drawback to using IG.
PixiePooCat says
I am recently new to IG and have experienced the things you speak of. I don’t mean to spam but when I made a few duplicate comments like “Beautiful ?” they blocked me. They even had a pop up message to explain my actions but that didn’t seem to help. I was blocked (and still am) for 24 hours. I can still like pictures but not allowed to comment. I can also post pictures but my caption and hashtags are not visible. I can understand what they are trying to accomplish but it’s just frustrating. Great article, thanks for sharing. Wish I saw this before I got blocked!
Louise Myers says
I know, Pixie, it’s frustrating. I hope at least you can avoid it happening again!
mistyskydancer says
I thought I would add a comment here as it still is happening. I was the lucky recipient this time. LOL. I thought maybe at first it was my computer being dumb. So I posted again. Then I realized many hours later it was the fact that I added please follow me on one of the popular large accounts that are also verified. My ban is for just those accounts. I am allowed to see their images and like them but I am unable to comment. However, I am still allowed to post and comment on smaller accounts that are not verified. It appears that the ban is for 24 hours. Maybe I will get unbanned sooner as I commented on the tell us why.
Louise Myers says
Thanks for sharing your story! Hope it gets cleared up soon.
PixiePooCat says
That sucks! I’m experiencing the same thing.
Ryan says
How do I know if I’ve been blocked? At the moment I’m getting an error saying “error posting you comment” and can’t even include a caption with a post I’m trying to make at the moment
Louise Myers says
Hey Ryan
I’m pretty sure if you’ve been blocked you would have gotten a notice like the one I showed. Maybe try reinstalling the app? I’d love to hear if that does the trick.
dexter says
hi louise..im having this issue where it says temporaily blocked…now this has happened to me quite a few times…but its only lasted 24 hours the most…now its been like two days since i last liked a picture…i can still upload pics, comment, and follow people.you have any idea why it would be taking this long for me to like pics? thanks
Louise Myers says
I’m sorry to say, I don’t. If you come across any info or insights, I’d appreciate if you let me know! Best I can do is gather data to try to help others.
Best of luck!
Aditi says
Hello madam,
I have opened my instagram yesterday and started following a lot of celebrities on the very first day. But I can’t comnent on any page, and it says that I’m blocked from commenting. Can you tell me when might i get unblocked? Its very annoying..
Louise Myers says
Unfortunately, I don’t know. I’d appreciate if you’d come back to let me know how long it takes for you. The only way I can help others is by gathering some data from users it’s happened to.
Thanks!

Hey, I’m wondering if I should create a new account because of the “cant comment of accounts with over 50k problem.” I’ve had my account for about 2 weeks now and it still hasn’t fixed itself. I would like to know if its worth it to create a new account and not comment on popular pages or wait. But what am i waiting for if the problem isn’t solved? And how do I get this to go away? And will or when will it go away? Please respond I need your help,
~Mia
Louise Myers says
Mia, I’m sorry that I don’t know the answer to this. I haven’t experienced it myself, and all I know about it is from other commenters here.
Nancy says
I just made a new Instagram account and deleted my old one months ago. Since I made a new one its hard to leave comments on a lot of open pages for example on the “Instagram comedy” I can’t leave a comment! it says “COMMENT BLOCKED your comment could not be posted. We restrict certain content and actions to protect our community. Tell us if you think we made a mistake.” I contacted them yesterday. Still waiting on a reply.
Louise Myers says
Thanks for sharing your experience, Nancy. This issue seems to be hitting new accounts the most. I’m sure IG is bearing down on new accounts that comment on big accounts as (unfortunately for honest people) that’s what spammers do.
Sandy says
I am a doglover and promote the adoption of homeless dogs from shelters and rescues. When I see an abused or neglected dog posted from a high-kill shelter I like to tag other doglovers so that we can help find someone to adopt the animal before they are put down. Because of this, the more I try to help homeless animals, the more my account is blocked. So frustrating. I’m just trying to help!
Louise Myers says
I’m sorry to hear this, Sandy. I hope IG is working on this problem.
Shayr says
Hello
Yes I was posting a photo and then all of a sudden my account was shut down and I was asked to reset my password because a message popped up saying due to suspicious activity we want you to reset your password to protect yourself. I did that and when I can back I went to post my picture again and the picture was posted but none of my content or hashtags are under it? I then went to reply to a compliment someone left and then a message popped up saying I was blocked til next Tuesday ( which is a week ) I am following all of the instagram community guidelines and only use my account for POSITIVE activity. I only tag my followers and post photos of fashion & my family & friends. I have heard of this happening to a ton of people lately. We don’t know what we are doing wrong Because we all got blocked for a week after doing different things? It is extremely frustrating when you can’t contact them. If course I hit the “tell us if this is a mistake” button and I emailed them through the help center and nothing changes. I have sent them a DM , I tried reaching out on twitter & Facebook and replying to the email I received about resetting my password. It seems unfair that this happens to good people who use their account for good. Does anyone know the limit of pictures you can post a day ? I think I posted 10 pictures yesterday but I didn’t see any guidelines about the amount of photos you can post in a day. IG needs to get their act together and figure out a new system. They should incorporate ” I’m not a robot ” if they are worried about spamming. I’m certainly not a spammer and I don’t ever put any abusive content on to instagram. This makes me scared to use IG again after my 1 week ban because I don’t want it to happen again and I have no idea why it happens to begin with especially because it’s happened to a bunch of people I know and we were all doing different things when it happened ? Would love some help. Thanks kindly
Louise Myers says
I’m so sorry to hear this, Shayr. Unfortunately Instagram is unresponsive on this issue and I don’t know all the reasons why it’s happening – I can only speculate from what I’ve heard.
I don’t believe there’s a limit on photos posted in a day, but 10 is certainly more than average. You might try keeping it to 3 per day, spaced out across the day.
I’d appreciate hearing if you find out anything, so we can keep others informed. Best of luck.

Ray Byron says
Our account seems to have been blocked from commenting. We have submitted the form and will wait. We are a new Social Network that was hoping to use Instagram to market our brand.
Honestly, We’re not sure why people would put up with these restrictions that are way too aggressive. The whole point of a ‘social’ app is to be ‘social’. Perhaps Instagram has forgotten that the users are the reason for its success.
In the mean time if you’d like a social app that isn’t so restrictive please give us a go. We actually send an email so you know why you have been temporarily disabled. An effective spam filter should determine the frequency of the comment, not simply block a user for repetitive comments such as ‘congrats’.
We’re currently in the Apple Store as Ububbl: Social Network. We’ll be releasing other versions later this year. But would love to have your support.
Louise Myers says
Thanks for your thoughtful comment. Your app sounds interesting – best of luck!
Lachlan says
Instagram things saying the word spam is wrong, on a page that advertises other pages , I kept trying to write ” just report as spam” and Instagram said, your account is banned for abusive content? Yet friends swear on my page all the time? Get your crap right Instagram
Lachlan says
As in I had 24 hrs ban, but it’s so annoying, I can’t even comment on friends posts!!!
Jessica says
As someone who just started a fitness instagram to try to connect with others who have the passion, I’m finding this to be very annoying! My second day in they already blocked me from making comments on a popular fitness page because I said “I’m excited to try this workout!” and now I just got a warning that I was blocked for 24 hours from making any comments because they’ve found that I’ve “made that action too many times”… yes, I am commenting more than I normally would, but I would say it’s far from excessive. I’ve maybe posted 10-15 comments today, throughout the day, and they see that as too much?
Then when I try to click the box that says “if you think we’ve made a mistake let us know” – it makes the app freeze and I have to delete and re-install the entire app. What a pain. Thanks spammers!
Louise Myers says
I agree, that the “let us know” doesn’t even work right just adds insult to injury. I wish they could fix this whole problem!

Well I’m a Vaping advocate. I just reached 7000 followers and for the past two weeks I’ve been blocked twice for a week extremely frustrating especially when you’re dealing with a computer you will never ever get a reply from Instagram especially from any human being I pray for the day Instagram goes the way of myspace i’m so sick of being targeted for doing nothing wrong especially not being able to retort if there someone out there who is just angry at me because I won something that they wanted or said something they didn’t like the last time I checked we live in America and I’m entitled to my opinion which I try not to offend anyone
Louise Myers says
Sorry, Dan. This is so widespread and I don’t know that there’s a solution!
Megs says
I’ve been comment blocked recently, once for 24 hours and now 1 WEEK! Turns out all I’ve done is participate in giveaways where they say “tag a friend who would like to win”, and each comment/tag is an entry. These are typically small giveaways, like handmade items or shop credits. I’m in the “small business” world. I’m terrified to be banned/deleted, as it would RUIN my small businesses social networking!
Louise Myers says
It is a little scary, Megs! Best of luck in the future. Wish IG would get this sorted!

Hi there, well as of last night there are over 30 accounts in my circle in IG jail, is what we are calling it. We all got logged out automatically and told to change our passwords, and then when we logged back in it told us, we are blocked from
Commenting for 7days. Saying our content is abusive .. We can post photos and like photos, but no writing of any such.. There is no way to contact IG, and this stinks cuz I’m a business , and through the holidays need my account active 🙁
Louise Myers says
Sorry to hear this, Kelly!

I addressed this in the article. There’s nothing you can do about it.

I’m new in instagram, I have a problem I can’t comment or tag one person, only one, with others it’s okay, but what is the problem with this one person? I havn’t posted anything offensive or bad, didn’t use many @-s or #-s, didn’t comment the same twice or tagged people, just a simple comment like” you are pretty”, or “this is nice”, then wanted to comment to another photo of this person, then then I saw it’s blocked, but that person has not blocked me.. so what is the problem?? I feel bad 🙁
Louise Myers says
It’s weird,, I know. I had one person tell me that their username is often blocked from being tagged.
Sorry I don’t have an answer!
Annoyed user says
When it last? ? I just want to say Hi to some celebs I admire but it say that my Comments are abusive even though it’s not. Even the most innocent word it say that my comment is abusive. but I can add comments to those who follow me only. Hope you can help regarding to this matter Lou thank you.
Louise Myers says
Hi,
I’m sorry, I know this is frustrating. The problem is you’re targeting big accounts. Even if you’re not a spammer, Instagram doesn’t know that you’re not, because that’s the behavior they expect from spammers.
You just have to wait it out, my friend!
EmiliaArabella says
I’ve been blocked for a month because I said thank you too many times on one day last week. I tried to report the ban as an error but couldn’t even get the form to load. Instead I got a ‘502 bad gateway’ error page. I was asked to verify my account and change my password which I did and was still then blocked from making any comments anywhere – on my own pics when I post them (so no description and no tags) and from leaving compliments on other IGers pics. A whole month of not being able to write a single word is too harsh. The most frustrating part is that I’ve now appealed a few times but you get no feedback and it feels like no one is listening. With all the porn that gets posted and is still being posted it feels so unfair to be banned for a whole month for thanking people. My account is @emiliaarabella and I’m clearly not a spamming robot ?
Louise Myers says
I’m so sorry this is happening to you, and all the other good guys. A couple days ago I was blocked for replying to someone who had tagged me! It seems that IG could figure this out a little better.
Blake says
About 2 weeks ago I was blocked for commenting on some Disney channel actor’s accounts I needed to rake in activity then all the sudden I’m blocked from even saying “hi” on celeb/famous accounts for 24hrs that day. I didnt want to spam but i needed to advertise to get viewers.I had my account for 7 months now with ~290 followers and I didn’t tag anybody/duplicate comments. And others tag me in comments and they didn’t get blocked!? That’s strange. And also why when I unfollow a bunch of people to cut down my following list I’m blocked from following people. Is there a daily limit? And one last question when I follow some people on Instagram or request to follow them it won’t let me because it displays “following” or “requested” for one second then displays “follow” again when I press the white “follow” box. and I asked them if they blocked me in person or over text/phone they said no. Is this some glitch?
Louise Myers says
It’s possible it’s a glitch. I’ve noticed a few glitches since I’ve updated the app but not my iOS yet. But, if you need to “advertise” you’ll have to pay to run ads. Tagging people or promoting on celeb accounts isn’t advertising, it’s spam.
Lollo says
Thanks for a great article!
I recently started using a old account I haven’t used for a while. It is a inspiration account with a mix of my own photos and other peoples photos which I add filter on. I of course tag the people that own the inspo photos and I also tag what brands the person is wearing etc. It is a fashion account! Since 5-6 days ago I try to tag people into my photo, the tags show the first few seconds but as soon as I scroll down, leave the page or click on the person I tagged to see if the tag worked it goes away!!
This is sooo annoying. Can they have blocked me from tagging my photos because I tagged a lot of accounts several photos in a row?
Anybody that heard of this before? Im totally clueless!
Thanks in advance
Kind regards
L
Louise Myers says
I would guess it’s that you’re tagging multiple accounts with a lot of followers.

I just got Instagram and while following all of my friends i got an error message saying that I’m going too fast and that I had exceeded the limit so it has blocked me. This was last night and I can still can’t follow anyone, Instagram help centre and support is also not answering any of my questions or complaints.
Louise Myers says
They do have limits for following as well ad commenting and liking. I don’t think there’s anything you can do but wait it out.
Martin says
Hi guys, this solution works for : when your comments are blocked ?
Please keep me inform.
Cordially,
Martin
Louise Myers says
Not sure what you’re asking. Can you clarify?
Luis - Portugal says
Quick fix that seems to work: change your bio to something else other than your current one.
Louise Myers says
Great tip! Thanks Luis.
Emma Burford says
Interesting Louise I found this just at the right time as since my iOS9.01 update a few days ago none of my comments are showing up on my news posts. Although when the post auto shares to Facebook all the comment and hashtags can be seen there?!! Weird huh… I need to get to the bottom of this. Plus I can non longer edit my old comments I get a red comment update failed message 🙁 Will try IG support but not holding my breath….
Louise Myers says
Ugh, that sounds like a crazy bug, Emma! I haven’t updated to 9 yet, guess I’ll wait longer. Best of luck, let me know if you get it sorted.
HUMAYUN NASEEM says
I get an error when trying to add a comment
I am being blocked from commenting on any famous persons photo. I’m not using any slang/abusive words , I’m not commenting same words again and again, not a hatred speech. I dnt know why I’m being blocked. I’m new at Instagram. I have been trying to install Instagram, coz there was an error dismiss, now when it installed , it’s restricting me to comment. if there are 400 millions followers and not working, its heavy then shut it down, plz anyone help me, I’m vv angry and disheartened.
Louise Myers says
I don’t believe there’s a solution for this. I would bet that Instagram has detected a pattern that when new accounts immediately comment on large accounts, it’s spam. Seems like a wise precaution on their part to restrict this type of activity.
Catherine says
Help! I created a new account 2 days ago and I cannot comment on people’s photos (I checked and they all have above 50k) and I can’t tag anyone in my photos! When i am posting, I tag them but then after I post and click on the photo nothing comes up and I have tried numerous times to manually add them in but I still can’t! help!?
Louise Myers says
Hi Catherine,
You need to mature your account. By starting a new account and immediately engaging in spammer-like behavior, you’re sending bad signs to Instagram.
Suzi says
Do you know anymore about the 50k glitch? I just started a fitness account and this is affecting me!
Louise Myers says
I’ve discovered 2 things:
This affects new accounts, so you may need to be patient until your account is seen as more established.
One user said logging out and then back in again lifted his block. I’m a bit doubtful, but you could try it.
Ella says
Hi,
I’m not able to like, let alone comment on anything on IG for about 2 months now. I don’t tag people often, I don’t spam anyone with comments and yet here I am. ‘Action blocked: our security systems had detected that a lot of people are posting the same content…’
I mostly follow fitness accounts on healthy eating and I post pictures of my food for that community (we are encouraged to share and inspire others). So where’s the spam?
I clicked numerous times on the ‘Tell us’ button because I think it’s not fair and I filled out the form on this page..still nothing. It’s kind of annoying at this point where 2 months later, it hasn’t been fixed. Have you guys/girls been unblocked ?
Louise Myers says
That’s really weird, and I’m sorry to hear it. So when you try to comment *anything* you get that message? It’s not that it’s a comment that might be seen often?
In the article I noted that posting “Congrats” was blocked as it’s a common comment – even though obviously not spam.
I wish I could help.
nameless says
hello how are you ?
How can I unblock comments in instagram ? I’ve made ten instgram accounts because of that problem
thanks
Louise Myers says
Hi, there isn’t a way to unblock. If you’ve had it happen 10 times you’re probably doing something they don’t like. You can contact IG at the link in the post, but if you’re spamming it won’t help.
Vanessa says
I keep getting blocked when I comment on an account over 50k and my account is only 4 days old WTH. I didn’t do anything wrong and it’s been happening since I signed up uggh.
Louise Myers says
Hi Vanessa,
New accounts get blocked from commenting on large accounts. Whether your comments are innocent or not, IG sees it as behavior typical of spammers.
It’s annoying, but you have to wait it out.
I’m sorry for the delay in replying – I just found your comment in my spam folder.
Bob says
I keep getting blocked when I say want to say is “great photo” or “Great shot of the mountains”. I don’t even tag anyone. The weird thing is that I only get blocked on some accounts and not on others(my own and one other guy’s who has followers I don’t get blocked on), its pretty frustrating.
Louise Myers says
I hear ya Bob, it’s getting really annoying. My only solace is that the spam has really decreased.
Instronaut says
My comment was also blocked couple of times. I was wondering for the reason. Now, by reading your blog I got to know the reason.
Louise Myers says
Hmm, maybe from using your own service? Be wary, folks.
Alisha says
Hi!
Ive been getting the ‘action blocked, our security systems have detected that a lot of people are posting the same content’ error.
I can post pictures and accept new followers (im set private), but I cant like, follow or comment.
the thing is, ive hardly ever used instagram or liked or commented in the past months. so i literally didn’t do anything.. AT ALL. i havent commented or liked anything in a few weeks.
This makes no sense. and I reinstalled it and its been blocked like this for over a week!
I really wanna use instagram more again, I’m so upset. 🙁
Louise Myers says
That’s awful, Alisha!
I guess we all need to voice our concerns to Instagram with the report form, and hope they do something! It’s really getting out of hand.
dimdim says
I’m getting this same error for over a month now, it’s really pissing me off! And they don’t reply every time I report the issue
mari says
Instagram won’t let me comment at all on anyone’s photo who has over 50k but I can comment on my friends things who has less followers. I did nothing wrong to get my comments blocked and I wanna know how long will it do this and how can I fix it? Please help
Louise Myers says
Hi Mari,
I’m sorry to say, I have no idea how long this will go on. I don’t think there’s anything you can do to hurry it along. Just be sure you’re not making duplicate comments or multiple tags, which would likely make it worse.
If you’d like, you can report the problem to Instagram using this form.
Kristin says
I just got locked out for a whole week. I have no clue why. Ig is good but this is ridiculous! Weird thing is I can post, I can use dms and like, just can’t comment.
Louise Myers says
So disappointing, isn’t it? Sorry to hear this, Kristin.
Bt says
Hello Everyone & Happy New Year ,

Happy New Year! I hope Instagram treats you better 🙂
Bt says
Hello Everyone & Of Course Our Own SuperLady Louise,?

Lot Of Luv??
Sally says
Hi! I was tagging my friend on some pictures and videos and all of the sudden Instagram says that my comment was blocked. I tried testing it out to see if I could comment on other accounts. I could, but when I reach accounts with more than 50K followers, they block me from commenting it’s getting annoying! Do you know how long this might last? They don’t say until when they just tell me “Comment Blocked.” Thank you!!
Louise Myers says
Sally, I don’t have an answer for that. Tagging people causes my comments to get blocked too, even though I’m replying to them! It’s frustrating.
joei says
Is there a way to get “unblocked”?
Louise Myers says
I haven’t heard of any. If you change up your comments, you should be fine. The latest is that you may also need to be cautious about tagging people. I’ll add details to the post.
jowhara says
I tagged ppl and now I cannot open the app 🙁
help me plz
Louise Myers says
Hi Jowhara,
The same thing happened to me, and doing a hard shutdown of my phone solved the problem. The app was just frozen.
If it’s still frozen, you could try deleting and reinstalling the app. Please Google that first – I haven’t tried it myself, but if you can’t open it at all, that might be your solution.
mari says
Sally, that’s my same problem. Are you still blocked from commenting?
Soledad says
I can put comment for some accounts only and for othe accounts I got blocked in comments I dont know why 🙁
Louise Myers says
I hear you, Soledad, it’s getting frustrating!
Handaomenewishguy says
Me too!!!
Annoyed user says
Me too 🙁 why? What should I do?
Bedazzelle says
Hello. I have had very annoying experiences on IG. I can comment on posts but not ‘ stars’ posts. It’s ok for them to put pics of half naked woman in my feed but it’s not ok for me to comment. That’s just not right. They need to get it together. It’s a nice app but very frustrating. Why are they hypocrites?
Louise Myers says
I’m sorry, I don’t have an answer for you on that issue.
Victor says
How long will take for them to unblock my action in my instagram account
Louise Myers says
I have no way of knowing.
yana says
I also can’t comment on instagram. And i don’t know why. This is frustrating. How to recover this problem?
Louise Myers says
Hi Yana,
I wish I knew the answer, but I don’t. I’ve heard IG is really cracking down on accounts they think might be spammers – even if they’re not. A lot of accounts were shut down last week.
If I hear of any resolution to this, I’ll pass it on. In the meantime, all I can suggest is contacting Instagram directly.
Ali says
I have a strange problem in instgram, first of all I am a new user and I use instagram infrequently; the problem that I can’t post a two comments at the same time, almost always I am getting a blocked message and I have to wait at least 12 to 24 hours to post the second comment !!
Please I need your help
Thanks
Louise Myers says
Oh no! Sorry to hear that. I haven’t heard of this problem before, and unfortunately have no idea what to do.
However, if you are using a third-party app (like Padgram) do try going back to the native Instagram app. Instagram will block comments and likes through a third-party app – though the limit should be much higher than 1!
Caitlyn Fritz says
I just got Instagram yesterday and now I can’t comment on other people’s videos/posts! They get blocked and say they are abusive! I didn’t do anything wrong!
Louise Myers says
That’s awful! I don’t know why that would be – maybe too many comments in a short period – maybe you haven’t posted any pics so they think you’re a spammer. I hope none of your friends reported you as a “joke!”
Hope you get this fixed quickly.
Bianca Aurelio says
Hi ms. Louise Myers, thank u so much for this, it helped me understand what was going on everytime I try to add a comment being blocked by the app and telling me it’s abusive when it’s actually not. I have the same case as Ms. Caitlyn Fritz.
Louise Myers says
So sorry Bianca! At least you know it’s not your fault. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
Nikki says
This is happening to me too. My account is fresh and I have photos, not spammy ones. I go to interact on any given picture, not a duplicate comment, hashtagged, or tagged users… simply something like “This looks delicous. Now I want some,” on a pizza post, haha. And I get blocked every time.
Louise Myers says
While I can’t always figure out why comments get blocked, it could be 2 things:
~ Your account is new
~ Maybe your comments are on large accounts
But sometimes, it just seems random! Best of luck, hope it sorts out soon.
Manon says
Do you know how much time you get blocked? I can’t comment on some accounts and i would really like to know when it will stop–‘
Thanks! 🙂
Louise Myers says
Hi Manon,
I haven’t experienced being blocked from specific accounts, only duplicate comments, so I can’t help with that. Seems strange!
Let me know if you find any answers. Thanks!
Encore says
It happens to me quite often, sometimes I get blocked when tryna comment on ig accts with over 50k followers. Well I think ur post already did explain that, IG considers such comments as not or spam comments. Usually this happens to people who comment pretty often mostly on ig Accts greater than 50k followers. But most often IG give u a jail term of a couple of hours or sometimes days before they unblock your account.
Louise Myers says
Thanks for sharing your experience with Instagram commenting.
Veronica says
I’m a makeup artist and I tag companies that I use their products but Instagram doesn’t allow me to tag people . Do u know if this will be permanent?
Louise Myers says
Hi Veronica,
It’s a strange situation. Unfortunately, I don’t think anyone knows how long it will last – probably not even the Instagram team! I assume a lot of the problems are based on algorithms that aren’t quite working.
Lizzy says
This has been extremely frustrating for me as a concert photographer. I post photos of bands, which often times get reposted without credit. Every now and then I will do a quick scroll through of associated tags and I used to just leave a comment asking politely to add credit or tag my account, but now I can’t do that on more than 2 photos at a time without having to change the whole messaging! I hope they find a slightly less restrictive solution.
Louise Myers says
It’s annoying, but I doubt they’ll change it. I think you’ll have to change your wording slightly, or add a emoticon to alternate comments.
Kelsey says
Thank you for discussing this! I’ve been proverbially yelled at twice for completely innocent comments like “you look beautiful” – annoying , Instagram!
Louise Myers says
You’re welcome, Kelsey, I’m glad this helped explain it!
Rebecca Graf says
Every social networking site has this problem. I delete anyone who makes those kind of comments if they don’t get blocked. I have friends who do not get it and want to be successful in their online businesses. They refuse to listen and just post the most generic comments.
Thanks for this piece.
Louise Myers says
Rebecca,
I had no idea this goes on with other platforms. But in any case, it’s never helpful to post generic comments.
Thanks so much for your comment here! I’m sorry for the extreme delay in replying – I just found a number of valid comments in my spam folder.
Dana says
I have a question I can not seem to find a answer too nor a solution.
My account got report by numerous group of girl I knew and Instagram pulled it down. I have a large account and my activity was good until I lost my account and got it back. My likes on photos are half of what they were. It’s hard to grow my
Followers they seem to just drop off.
I post a photo and in 4minites manage to lose 200 followers which those odds don’t add up.
I send my followers from my snap chat to my
Instagram and also my followers get blocked from commenting for 24hr or following me option.
Why is my social reach damaged its unfair. I worked 4 years to build my account to have it lost to trolls and now it’s damaged goods.
How can I contact Instagram about this matter?
Louise Myers says
Sorry to hear this, Dana!
The only thing I know of:
To provide feedback or report technical issues, click the 3 horizontal lines at top right of your profile. Tap Settings at the bottom, then Help, then tap Report a Problem.
How did you get your account back?
Kristel says
Hi! I’ve been blocked by IG to comment or like photos via the web, but can still do it on the app. Any tips on how to solve that?
Adepoju Risikat says
Please help me find solution to all my comment block
Louise Myers says
All the tips I know are in the blog post and comments. Best of luck.
Anas Garba Adam says
Pls I don’t why I can not comment and like on my IG account?

I was getting random log ins from strange places. I reset my password but I wasn’t allowed to like or comment even on my own post!
After reading this Article, I logged out and logged in and now its ok!!
