What Page Names are Allowed on Facebook?

Before requesting a name change that may be rejected, I recommend you review the Business Page name guidelines. Some rules may surprise you!

Page names must accurately reflect the Page. Keep in mind that only authorized representatives can manage a Page for a brand, place, organization or public figure.

Page names can’t include:

  • Terms or phrases that may be abusive or violate someone’s rights.
  • The word “official” if the Page isn’t the official Page of a brand, place, organization or public figure.
  • Improper capitalization (example: tHe best CaFE). Page names must use grammatically correct capitalization and may not include all capital letters, except for acronyms.
  • Symbols (example: ® ) or unnecessary punctuation.
  • Descriptions or slogans (example: The Best Cafe – We serve the best coffee in town). People who manage Pages can add this information to a Page’s About section.
  • Any variation of the word “Facebook.”

Page names can’t consist only of:

  • Generic words (example: Pizza). Pages must be managed by official representatives of the topics they’re about.
  • Generic geographic locations (example: New York). However, you can create a Page name for an organization that represents a geographic location. For example, “New York City – Mayor’s Office” and “Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain” are acceptable Page names. source

In addition, there is a limit of 75 characters in your Page name.

This should be plenty! Think short and memorable. Further descriptions should be placed in your About section.

Telling Followers about the Name Change

Once your Facebook Page name has been updated, you should let your followers know about the change to maintain transparency and avoid confusion.

Here’s how to communicate the update effectively:

Create a Post Announcement

Share a post on your Page explaining the reason behind the name change. Be clear and concise, reassuring your audience that while the name changes, your mission and content remain the same.

Update Your About Section

Refresh your “About” section to include a note about the name change. This helps new visitors understand the history and ensures consistency across your Page.

Pin a Post

Pin your announcement post to the top of your Page so it’s the first thing visitors see. This is especially useful if your audience needs time to adjust to the change.

Leverage Stories or Reels

Use Facebook Stories or short videos to share the news creatively. Highlight key reasons for the change and what your followers can look forward to under the new name.

Engage with Comments

Respond to any questions or feedback on your announcement post. This is a great way to build trust and show your audience that you value their input.

By telling your followers about the name change, you can avoid people unfollowing your Page.

Why Can’t I Change my Facebook Page Name?

Not every Page can change its name at any time it wishes.

Here are reasons you might not be able to change the name of your business Page:

  • You don’t have a Page role that allows you to change your Page’s name. Learn how to see your Page role.
  • You or another admin recently changed your Page’s name (details below).
  • There may be limits on your Page (details below).
  • You can’t change the name of a regional Page if it falls under a global Page. source

How often can you change a Facebook page name?

Facebook now tells you, right before you confirm your Page name request:

Our review may take up to 3 days and require additional information.

If your name change is approved, you won’t be able to unpublish the Page or change the name again for 7 days.

During this time we may also let the people who like your Page know the name’s been updated.

Constantly changing your Page name is confusing for your customers and followers. And it might make Facebook decide your page is spammy.

Decide on a name you want to keep and don’t change it unless truly necessary.

Why would my FB Page have limits imposed?

  • Not all admins of your Page have authentic profiles.
  • Your Page has admins that continue to go against Facebook policies.
  • Your Page has a misleading name.
  • Your Page posts content that may mislead people who like or follow your Page.
  • The content posted on your Page goes against FB hate speech policies.

Want more details about limits? Find them on this Facebook help page.

How to Fix if you Can’t Change your Page Name

Review these 4 possible workarounds to see if they might apply to your Page. Then #6 will explain the only way I know of to contact Facebook about your Page name problems.

1 | Wait at least 7 days

If you’ve requested a change recently, give it at least 7 days before trying again.

2 | Contact your Facebook ad rep

If your Page runs Facebook ads, you’ve got an “in.”

Talk to your account rep about your need to change your Page name for business – s/he should be able to make that happen.

The advertising team will understand that your brand is not going to run paid ads if your Facebook page name is not your correct company name.

When money talks, Facebook listens 😉

3 | Change your Facebook Page category

I changed my Page Name years ago, so I don’t know if this option is still available. But I’m leaving it here so you can try it. Let me know!

Warning: If you have a verified Page, you may lose your verification if you change your category.

If you’ve never changed your Page name, but still don’t see the Edit option, try changing your Page category to Brands & Products or Companies & Organizations, and click Save Changes. The Request Change link should magically appear!

Now click Request Change and fill out the form (sample below).

How to Change Your Facebook Page Name: Form

Note that you have a choice of reasons for the Page name change request.

If you select that your business name has changed, you will almost certainly be required to provide documentation. Logos, business cards, and websites are not acceptable.

You can choose “Other” and explain in the text area.

My first choice was to change my Page name to match my website: How-To Social Media Graphics, and explain in “Other” that my business had evolved. I decided that had a high risk of being rejected.

I chose to request a very similar name to my then-current Louise Myers Graphic Design: Louise Myers How-To Graphics. I then selected “My Page name is misspelled” as the best option. (Don’t even ask how long I deliberated over this!)

Note: Hyphens (as shown in the screen shot) are no longer allowed in Facebook Names – either Page or personal profile.

Before submitting your Page name change request be 100% certain of 2 things:

  • This is the Page name you want for the life of your Page. At one time, Facebook allowed just ONE change, and they could revert to this at any time.
  • Your Fan page is 100% compliant with Facebook Terms of Service. Your Page could be shut down once it’s scrutinized by Facebook. Click with caution!

Upload any pertinent documentation, and click Send.

Wait to hear from FB on your Page name change request.

You should get an auto-reply quickly. I can’t say how long it will take for Facebook to review your request and respond – the auto-reply says up to 3 days. For me it only took one day plus a half hour.  And it was approved!

4 | Change your Facebook Page name a little at a time

If you’re having problems, this is worth a shot. I’ve heard from several people saying this worked for them.

Only change 1-2 words at a time.

For example:, say I wanted to change Louise Myers Graphic Design to How-To Social Media Graphics.

Step 1: Change to Louise Myers How-To Graphics

Step 2: Change to How-To Graphics

Step 3: Change to How-To Social Media Graphics

Adapt this process to your own situation.

Be sure you wait at least a week between each name change request.

5 | How to change your Facebook Page name a SECOND time

This is an older hack offered by a reader. It may or may not still work. You need to have “Global Pages” though.

You can learn more about Global Pages on FB help here, and if this might apply to your Page and situation. The creator of the SlideShare offers to answer questions – you can contact him via the info on slide 11.

6 | How to contact Facebook about Page name problems

As a last resort, you can contact Facebook. I say “last resort” because they are notoriously unhelpful.

I haven’t tried this form though – maybe it’ll get you the help you need. Please let us know if you try it!

Log into FB as an admin of the Page you need help with. Then visit the FB / Meta Business Help support page.

If you manage more than one Page, choose the one you need help with.

meta business help center showing where to open a support ticket.

Then choose the issue you need help with, which in our case is to change the name of a Page.

where to choose the facebook page problem you need help with.

FB will return some general tips, which we’ve covered thoroughly above. If they didn’t work, click the “Contact Support” button.

how to contact FB meta page support for a personal reply.

Fill out the form with your contact info, then “provide information that will help us investigate.” Attach screenshots of error messages or anything relevant you may have saved.

Then click “Send Email” and hope for the best 🙂

If FB definitely said it was your page name that was approved, is there any chance you’re looking at a cached version of the page?

If not, look for the live chat feature to get assistance. For me, this appears on my Page just below my cover photo on desktop.

I changed my FB page name and at first it was denied. I appealed and after sending them the documentation and info they requested, I received an email saying it was approved. However, when I go to my page, the name has not been changed and it says I cannot change it because I requested a change. It also will not let me change the suername because it says it is taken but its not. Any idea what I should do?

    Hi Louise,
we’ve been trying for the past 4 months to change our page name to be the same as our username. The link to request change won’t show ever. I’ve already sent them so many proof that our username is the same as our website and this is all over our FB page as well, and then I get no more replies. We’ve been trying to get a hold of anyone there, but it’s impossible! And the reject is always as us not meeting their guidelines, which we do.
    Any ideas here?
Also, can I open a new page and merge the current one to it? We have to make this change, otherwise we`ll need to close the page?
    I’d appreciate the help.

Facebook can be infuriating, and it’s virtually impossible to contact anyone unless you have an ad manager there.

It’s possible to merge pages, but I don’t know what the rules and restrictions are. Be sure to research it thoroughly before taking that step.

My newer one that I use more often is 550 likes, my other is 1750.

Hello Louise! I tried changing my page about 8 times in the last month. Each time is says to wait the required 3-7 days. When I check back, my name has not been changed and I have not received any notification of why. I just have another opportunity to change it again. I’ve been doing this for some time. The last time I sent a message asking for a reason or help and tried to change it again. When I went to check it tonight I got this message, “Your facebook page name cannot be changed.” With no reasons. Does “cannot” mean NEVER? Any other hacks to use? I changed it back in 2018 once with ease. The new name is very similar it’s just that the focus is on the coaching instead of the healing modalities. My Page name is Karyn Lynn Payton-Quantum & Bioenergetic Practioner and Transformational Coach. I wanted it changed to Spiritual & Relationship Coach – Biofield Practioner. Any ideas on what I might have done wrong to hack off the Facebook God’s? Thank you! Karyn

Your new name contains only “generic” terms which isn’t allowed for URLs, so possibly being blocked for your page name as well. Not sure though, just a guess.

If it were me I’d wait at least a month before trying again. I can’t say if it’ll ever be allowed to change at all, but that’s what I would do. 8 times is a lot of attempts so you may have reached a lifetime threshold.

And as a heads up, you have misspelled “practitioner.”

Hi – i need to change my page name due to legal reasons. It has refused my change (haven’t changed before, it isn’t in use, it is not offensive!) and now says I can’t request again. I am utterly desperate at the mention of court action but FB is preventing me from rectifying it. Any advice gratefully received!

I’m sorry Rhonda, I don’t know of any way to appeal to FB unless you have an ad manager. I hope you find an alternative, because otherwise (since it’s a legal issue) you would have to delete and start a new page.

Hey – not sure if you can help here but I read through your advice and am beyond desperate at this stage! I have changed my username successfully but have been refused a Page Name change. I urgently need to change this as I have been threatened with legal action over trademark issues (I was blissfully unaware that it was possible to trademark standard words in the English language but it turns out it is). I don’t know what to do – I have been told to stop using it immediately – how can I when Facebook won’t let me change 🙁 I am in the UK – tried looking at the categories thing but ours doesn’t offer those.

I am literally in tears about the implications of this as, even if I delete anything (which would probably put me out of business anyway as I organise events) it will still mean using the trademark violation name for another 15 days 🙁 Anything you can suggest would be very very gratefully received

    Hi Louise!
I have already made the request, and after many tries and documentation supplied, Facebook said the page name change was approved. But it would be gradually shown to the fans (6000 now) si that they would have the opportunity to dislike.
The thing is that it was 6 days ago, and the page name is the same. Do you know how much time it takes to be effective?
I am from Argentina, I don’t know if Fb policies are the same.

    Thanks!

Policies do differ by country. This must be a new thing – alerting fans so they can unlike? Never heard of that one!

It seems the name should be effective when FB says it’s approved.

This is so strange! I really have no idea what’s going on. 🙁

Listen, I want to create my facebook page name, but i got this mail from facebook: ” We’re unable to update your Page’s name because it looks like the name you requested doesn’t follow our guidelines for Page names. The name you requested suggests that the subject of your Page has changed, which can be confusing for people who like your Page.

Page name change requests that don’t meet our guidelines include changes that may be misleading (ex: renaming “I Love New York” to “I Love San Francisco”). Requests that meet our guidelines include removing descriptions from a Page’s name (ex: renaming “John Smith, Trainer” to “John Smith”).

To create a new Page name request that follows these guidelines, go to the About section of your Page, click Page Info in the left column, then click edit next to your current Page name. ”

I WANT MY PAGE NAME ” ASAD SHAH ” BUT FACEBOOK DID NOT APPROVE IT,SO WHAT SHOULD I DO?? HOW I CAN DO IT? SO I WANT SOME FACEBOOK PAGE’S NAME FOR GETTING APPROVAL FROM FACEBOOK.SO GIVE ME SOME EXAMPLES OF IT.

I don’t know why your name isn’t approved. FB must think it means something that is different from the theme of your page.

I don’t know what your current name or theme is, so I wouldn’t be able to provide examples that might work.

It sounds like you want to completely change your page. I doubt this is allowed. And I don’t understand the question about verification.

Check this page which lists ALL the Facebook support contacts. Maybe they can help.

I have over 400 likes. I did not read your post until after I requested to change from Red Coral Fertility to Justina Thompson. I wish I had read this first because they declined my request. I have never requested prior to this.

What do you suggest? Can I try again with the name Justina Thompson Fertiltiy?

It’s so silly because I did the name change for another company last year from Your Healing Place to Thriveology (at that point that had under 100 likes) and we did not even have to make a request and those names are extremely different.

I have sent in a request twice now to try and change the name of my page and I always get an auto reply saying they are unable to change the name of my page.

The word Absurd is in my Page Name and I accidentally spelt it Absured. It is literally one letter I want removed and it keeps getting rejected.

If anyone can help me out I would appreciate it.

I have already change my URL to the correct spelling. I have checked off the right reason for the name change, which is a misspelled word. Still I get automatically rejected.

I’m sorry to hear that Emily – I’m sure it’s frustrating.

If you haven’t yet changed your page name (which would account for an automatic rejection) then try another time or two – it may be a glitch. Or, it could be a new rule, I don’t know. FB changes all the time!

And I have both emails set the same, so I’m not sure which FB would choose if they’re different. Hope you’ve heard from them by now. It’s always possible they don’t even auto-reply any more!

    Hi Louise,
I am a musician and have been trying to change my stage name from my first and last name to just my first name. I go by just Shani, but obviously when I first opened my page a while back, I just inputed my name normally and didn’t think about it. Anyway, I had the same kind of doubts about submitting a document with an address as David did, but I see that maybe just a request to take out my last name would be sufficient. Do you think this would be categorized as “I would like to use a stage name or alternate name”, or “My Page name is misspelled”…or something else?

    Thanks for the help!

Is “stage name” an option for a musician page? Then that seems like the right choice.

If you’ve already tried changing your page category, I think you’re left with 2 options:
      • Contact Facebook support and hope for the best.
      • Check back regularly and see if the link appears again.

Hi Louise I am trying to submit a name change request for my bands facebook page. The current name is the band name followed by fan page and I want to have fan page removed from the name. We are based in the US and all of the page admins are based in the US. I change the category to get the name change request link to appear. On the form it asks to submit documentation ie. something with an address. I tried attaching a word document saying that we are a band and that we don’t have an address but when i hit submit it says that they don’t accept files of this type. We get an electric bill where we practice but it’s not in any of our names. What documentation would you suggest I send?

Hey David, any type of bill would only be helpful if it shows the name that you want on the fan page. Since you’re not really changing the page name, just asking to have the words “fan page” removed, I don’t think you need any documentation. I’m not a “page name change” expert, but I didn’t provide any, and you’re requesting even less of a change that I was.

      Good luck!

Perhaps this is a new requirement. They say they accept .jpg, .pdf and .doc – so unless your Word file is a .docx, I don’t know why it wouldn’t go thru. As far as requiring something with an address, I don’t know why they’d need that except for a “local business” category. You could contact FB support. This seems like a no-brainer change, but I wouldn’t want you to do anything that ruins your one and only chance.

Here are 2 things to try:
      • Change the main category to Brand and Products (you can change it back later)
      • Clear your cookies or try a different browser

Th 2nd method worked for a Page in Australia with 12K Fans. I’ve read this only works in the US but that doesn’t seem to hold true. FB changes all the time though!

Maybe FB by now just cut all the remaining loose threads…
