Color Preference by Gender

Color insights from Live Science.

Blue: Male 42%, Female 29%

Green: Male 25%, Female 19%

Purple: Male 12%, Female 27%

Red: Male 8%, Female 9%

Yellow: Male 5%, Female 6%

Orange: Male 7%, Female 3%

Pink: Male 1%, Female 7%

It’s surprising to me that purple is cited as the third most-liked color for both males and females. But they didn’t include brown, white, gray and black in this study. I’m guessing a lot of men prefer those neutrals over purple!

Meaning of Colors in Art and Design

Color theory is a collection of guidelines regarding the use of color in art and design, and it has deepened in interest since Isaac Newton’s conceptualization of the color wheel in the early 18th century.

It has been scientifically proven that different colors and hues have a significant impact on our emotions and the way we react, which is why brands spend rigorous amounts of time developing their branding to impact the way consumers feel.

Invaluable created a helpful infographic on the science of color, and how each can affect our emotions differently.

Refer to the visuals below to help guide your branding and accomplish the goals you seek to create from your business.

Blue color meaning

Blue has different meanings depending on the culture, and the specific tint or shade used.

In Western cultures, blue is generally considered calming and serene.

In Asia and the Middle East, blue represents immortality in connection. In Ukraine, it is a healing color.

Blue can also evoke sadness or aloofness. See the graphic below!

Blue color meaning and emotions

Green color meaning

Green is seen as refreshing or tranquil and can often represent luck, health, and prosperity.

Whole Foods and Starbucks utilize the color green to induce feelings of freshness and health.

Here are two examples of green color used in art to evoke ether serenity or prosperity.

Green color meaning and emotion

Purple color meaning

Purple is reputed to awaken creativity and imagination.

It can be associated with royalty since historically, only the rich could afford expensive items made with this hard-to-produce pigment.

Lighter hues of purple tend to exude more peaceful, tranquil emotions.

Purple color meaning and emotion

Red color meaning

The color red can exude different emotions depending on its use.

It has intense characteristics that elicit strong reactions, and many brands and advertisers try to capitalize on its visibility and stimulation.

YouTube, for example, uses red in their logo as a way to accent their brand name and attract viewers.

Red also tends to fuel passion, whether it be in an aggressive sense, or that of love.

Red color meaning and emotion

Orange color meaning

Like its color wheel neighbor red, orange is an attention-grabbing hue.

Orange can be used to signify extravagance and command attention.

Sports teams often use orange in their logos and mascots because it has an energetic undertone.

Though it’s bright and jovial, be careful of overusing orange, as it can get harsh.

Orange color meaning and emotions

Yellow color meaning

Yellow is bright and intense, so it triggers strong emotions.

Though it can be cheery and warm, it can also seem abrasive or cause frustration or anger when used in the wrong context.

While too much yellow overstimulates, a dash of yellow can stimulate your appetite. This is why fast food restaurants like McDonald’s incorporate it into their branding.

Yellow color meaning and emotion

Black color meaning

Black appears heavy from a visual standpoint. That’s why it’s used sparingly in art.

Artists looking to evoke a “darker” feeling rely on generous amounts of black.

Black is usually associated with power, authority, and mystery.

Black color meaning and emotion

White color meaning

As the absence of color, white has a pure, clean feeling – thus it’s used in hospitals and spas to suggest sterility and cleanliness.

While in Western cultures, white represents purity and elegance, in various Eastern societies, it’s closely associated with death and used in mourning rituals.

Be sure you know your audience so you use colors appropriately!

Colors such as Gold, Silver (…and so on) don’t really count as separate colors to me. They are just shades of a regular color.

For example, Gold is pretty much a yellow color – It’s Metallic Yellow!
Silver is a grey color – it’s Metallic Grey!
Bronze is a brown color – it’s Metallic Brown!
Rose may have to do with a pink color!
(I forget what copper looks like but it’s your favorite)!

In my opinion, your favorite colors are grey, yellow and pink-yellow! ?

    Hi, Louise …

Always enjoy looking in on — and learning from — your articles.

You could do a great companion piece on the psychology of color in business. You touched on it here with your mention of red/yellow being ‘appetizing’ colors for the food industry. Not just McD’s, but Burger King, Carl’s Jr, Wendy’s, Taco Bell utilize variants of red/yellow.

Interesting how (medium) blue tends to connote business. Think IBM, Chase Bank, and scores of other banks.

It would be great to see you expand on this and speak with greater definition to the psychology of color in business. Wouldn’t it be tremendously helpful to keep in mind as we design ours or other S/M presences?

    Interesting read 🙂

I noticed one thing that is factually wrong – babies have horrible vision for the first few months. Babies can’t see subtle colors differences until about 2-3months of age. By 5 months they have full color development.

Interesting. While they may not have full color development, I’ve found many articles online that say they can distinguish colors. Not subtle differences, of course!

Here’s one quote: At one week after birth, they can see red, orange, yellow and green.

Another: As their color vision begins to develop, babies will see red first – they will see the full spectrum of colors by the time they reach three months of age.

No idea how they determine this! I don’t think it’s terribly important – though an interesting subject.

Not accurate for me either–in fact I’m the opposite, a perpetually anxious contrarian. My favorite color is gray because I love the drama, the calm, and the modern all combined. I think if your favorite color is grey your a person who makes your own judgments of people and events because picking grey isn’t exactly conforming–picking blue would be.

If 42% of males favorite color is blue and 29% of the female populations favourite colour is blue; then your statement below, that 40% of the populations favorite color is blue is statistically incorrect (assuming that the population consists of 50% male and 50% is female).
Is there another gender accounted for in this survey that I don’t know about.

Do not have a hard specific favourite colour thou leans towards a pearly blue darkish grey with streaks of green supported on brown. Not a mixup of colours but dynamic depending on mood, object/subject involved or portrait. Least propably purple, pink or a harsh blue.

I thought I was obsessed with color, especially blue, my absolute favorite! I’ve weeded out all the red I had years ago and prefer just about any shade of blue over anything else. Most of my wardrobe and furnishings are some shade of blue, but I do like green, purple, yellow and pink and various shades of each of those as well. I really hate red, though, am actually repelled by it. I can tolerate orange, more in the pastel range, though, and cranberry and magenta are about as red as I can stand, but not fire engine red, not even tomato or candy apple (unless it’s metallic on a car). What does all that say about me, I wonder?

I’d be interested in knowing if you see the color of individual words. I read that everyone does but most lose that ability around 4 or 5 years old. I still associate colors with words & I’m 68. Once my daughter said she did, too (she was 19 at the time) & my husband said he didn’t believe us. We asked him to make a list of 20 random words and we went into different rooms with a copy & wrote down their colors. On comparison, we had the same color for every word but 2 of them. One she had green & I had aqua; the other she had brown & I had tan. The results surprised us all!

I also don’t have a favorite color. I think every color is beautiful and don’t want to just like one. God made all colors in the world he created so I can’t even think about choosing just one color. I will say that I wear lots of black but I do that for two different reasons. One because my husband didn’t like me to wear bright colors or any colors as far as that goes and the second is because I am over weight and I wear it to help me look thinner. If I do chose color, it isn’t any particular one. I usually paint the walls of my house white or close to it so I can don’t have to just use one color very long and can change it around more often without having to paint the walls all the time.

Hi Judge! If you have been taught by a school teacher before that black and white aren’t colors, well I actually Disagree on that. I can say:

      (1) White is the Lightest Color of all colors and when mixed with any regular color, it makes a tint (a lighter version) of that color!

      (2) Black is the Darkest Color of all colors and when mixed with any regular color, it makes a shade (a darker version) of that color!

Overall, Black and White ARE the only 2 COLORS that make light or dark shades of each color. In fact, they can be named the Tint and Shade colors!!!

I enjoyed the article. One mistake that needs to be clarified: it’s not white that’s the absence of color- black is. White is the combination of all the colors on the spectrum which is why white light that passes through a prism will break up into the colors of the rainbow.

It’s not a “mistake.” Whether it’s the absence or presence of all colors depends on if you’re talking about pigments or light.

Love GREEN! I could say is that although I would not rely this as to who I really am, presentation is quite right bay the way I am. But really I am a well-natured person in my opinion, so. I guess it works! But of course we associate colors with things and feelings towards somethings generally.

My favourite colour is first of all blue then dark green, I don’t get attracted by light or normal green. Is there no difference for different shades of the same colour??

    HI Louise,

I was curious this afternoon about what colors mean and why do people like certain colors.

As a child, I was very much so was a tomboy so the color red was always my favorite. As I entered teen years I changed it to pink to mold into the “new” me which was to ditch the tomboy look for a more girly appearance. Towards the end of my teenage years I changed it to black because I’ve lost touch with color and didn’t want to draw attention. However recently I’ve returned back to loving red again along with black.

I’ll say I’m not exactly the type to match red traits. I match mostly black and a bit of grey. But regardless, I still like red even though its not the bright kind of red anymore, more of a dark red.

Overall, this was really fun to read and allowed me not only understand myself better but the people around me.

Just $.02 of thoughtful nutrition, one’s basis for choosing a favorite color shouldnt be influenced by discovering its meaning. I say that due to noticing comments made about the list of favorite color meaning personality traits being completely out of tune, because after 3 decades, i am today years old and just learning why Blue is my favorite color. And it was spot on. Dont get me wrong, i think its safe to assume we all can find other traits from different colors that we can force through our personal square. If the color one has loved since childhood is blacks nemesis, then maybe the truth is,.. you’re color blind. I also thank the anti-color for being the fuel for a pro-color’s firstborn blog comment. BLUE OUT!

    Great article!

I’m glad you didn’t include the word ‘Female’ with the information concerning the Pink color!

I am a man who loves Pink! I have named it my #1 favorite color!!

I personally hope for the culture that says ‘Pink for girls and Blue for guys’ to come to an end.

By the way, I have a different reason why I like Pink – that doesn’t have anything to do with the info mentioned in this article!

Every person has a color group. Tones also tell the emotion level and moods you are going through. I’ve noticed that on my own. My favorite color was discovered when I was about 6 years old. I loved nature. My other color was purple. As a child wishing to look like a princess my colors were purple pink and blue. My colors now still continue with green at the top, purple next and brown everything else. Nature topped with a little feminine charms I guess.
I’ve enjoyed looking over this website. This is the first time I have looked up what colors mean because for the last six years I have a dusty blue color for my room and like it that way although it is not my favorite color. Blue is conservative. I think if I through it out it will give me good luck and I can become wealthy. Just another phase in life.
I’ve taken a lot of time so here you go.
