But what does that have to do with your Facebook Fan Page?

Plenty, according to a Buddy Media study of 1,800 top brands’ Facebook Pages. Posts that use emoticons receive 52% more Facebook fan engagement! These posts have a 57% higher like rate, 33% higher comment rate and 33% higher share rate. Facebook emoticons can be a great way to humanize your brand and increaseย fan engagement.

Facebook emoticons allow quick, non-verbal communication that would be hard to explain in text alone. Consider the difference between three possible Facebook messages:

  • We had 200 customers today in our new store ๐Ÿ˜€
  • We had 200 customers today in our new store ๐Ÿ˜›
  • We had 200 customers today in our new store :(

Do you interpret these posts differently due to the added visual element of the emoticon? Ask yourself if you would react the same way if the post was simply:

  • We had 200 customers today in our new store.

The emoticons, even though they’re very simple visuals, engage you emotionally and encourage you to care about the news item.

So use them! Just be sure to use them in moderation. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Thanks Louise for sharing this infographic.

    The thing I find most interesting is that the way the emoticon is drawn affects engagement rate. For example, the smile emoticon :-) with the nose “-” increased engagement by 35% while the smile emoticon :) without the nose increased engagement by 50%.

    The opposite is true for the wink emoticon ;-). The one with the nose got 60% whereas without the nose ๐Ÿ˜‰ got 40%. Go figure!

    We will have to test the different types ourselves to see what works best for our target audience

      Isn’t that crazy, Alex? Well, now most emoticons will appear as the art icons in posts and comments, so the nose doesn’t matter any more. How quickly things change on Facebook!
